A note on how we measure. All zipline spans on this page are stated as straight-line plan distance between towers. Cable length is greater in every case, because of catenary sag and gradient. We publish plan span throughout because it is the only figure that can be independently checked against a survey — and because zipline lengths are quoted so inconsistently across this industry that comparison is otherwise meaningless.

Fong Fong Ma Falls is also known as Nuranang Falls, Jang Falls and Bong Bong Falls.

The Brief

Fong Fong Ma Falls drops 100 m in two stages into the Nuranang Chu, two kilometres from Jang town and forty from Tawang, on the road north of the Sela Tunnel. It is among the most photographed places in Arunachal Pradesh and has been since a song sequence was filmed there in 1997 — the first Hindi film shot in the state.

For all that, visitors stopped for twenty minutes and drove on.

The Public Works Department, Jang Division, wanted to change the arithmetic: to turn a photograph stop into a destination people plan a day around, and to do it without diminishing the thing they came for. That is a harder brief than it sounds. Adventure infrastructure placed badly at a natural site competes with the landscape. Placed well, it gives people a reason to stay and a new angle on what they came to see.

Site Constraints

Three conditions shaped every decision on this project.

A working power station. The Jang hydel plant sits at the base of the falls, generating for the local grid. It could not be interrupted, its infrastructure could not be endangered, and its access could not be obstructed — not during construction and not in operation. Every alignment, every foundation position and every construction sequence was set around that constraint before anything else was considered.

Eastern Himalayan slope at 2,900 m. Steep gradient, high rainfall, saturated soil for months of the year, and freeze-thaw cycling through winter. Foundation design here is not a matter of scaling up a standard detail.

Forty kilometres of mountain road. Everything arrived from the plains, over the Sela Tunnel, on a road that sets a hard ceiling on component length, weight and lifting capacity at the far end. Fabrication had to be designed backwards from what could physically reach Jang and be assembled with the plant and labour available there.

Any one of these would shape a project. Together they meant the design could not begin from a catalogue.

Standards and Certification

Structural steel is designed to the applicable provisions of IS 800, and RCC foundations to IS 456. Structural design for this project was independently reviewed and certified by Inimitable Consultants Pvt. Ltd., an external structural consultancy. All technical equipment was supplied with the original manufacturer's test certificates. The installation was commissioned against a project-specific load-test and handover plan.

Attribution

The Fong Fong Ma Adventure Zone was inaugurated on 22 June 2025 by the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. The project was executed under the Public Works Department, Jang Division. OXO Planet was responsible for design, engineering, fabrication and installation of the adventure infrastructure.
